How To Avoid Car Wrecks in the Rain

It’s pouring rain, but you’ve got to go pick up the groceries and the flowers for tonight’s dinner party. You think to yourself, “It’s just a little rain” and proceed to drive to the store as you normally would.

Let’s keep that same scenario, but instead of rain, there’s snow. You’re more than likely going to choose to stay home or if you do drive to the store, you are extra, extra careful.

Snow vs. Rain

People tend to take extra precautions when there is snow or ice on the road. In reality, studies show that the number one hazard for causing fatalities is rain. Reduced visibility greatly increases the chances of an accident occurring. Rain also makes the buildup of oil on the asphalt runny and slippery. Because the oil runoff is often unseen, it makes it even more difficult for drivers to anticipate what areas of the road might be slick. Fog can be a side effect of rain, which greatly reduces visibility, adding strain on drivers and making blind spots on the road even more dangerous. Since southern storms are hard to anticipate, it’s important to change your driving habits when you notice one approaching.

Weather Related Accident Statistics and Facts

Over a ten year period, 73% of weather related crashes were due to wet pavement and 47% of weather related fatalities were due to rain. In comparison, 30% of weather related crashes occurred because of snow, sleet or icy pavement. The same inclement weather factors accounted for 23% of weather-related fatalities. Overall, there is an average of 5,748,000 vehicle crashes each year and 22% of those crashes are caused due to weather-related issues.

If you are involved in a car accident during inclement weather, it’s important to remain calm and follow the same procedures as you would if the car accident occurred on a beautiful, sunny afternoon. This includes getting the other drivers’ information, seeking medical treatment, and notifying the police.
