Life-Changing Accidents & Injuries On The Slopes

Skiing

Every snow season, we hear about ski and snowboarding accidents, even here in Georgia, where we have eight ski resorts, such as Peek’n Peak, Powder Ridge, and Shanty Creek. Sadly, some of these accidents can be debilitating, and even deadly.

When resorts are negligent about the safety of their operations, people can get hurt. When this negligence is the cause in fact and proximate cause of the injury, those injured and sometimes their families will sue based on accidents that are the result of foreseeable hazards that the resorts failed to protect against by taking reasonable precautions.

Below, we discuss some of the most common types of accidents and injuries that occur at resorts each year, and what should be done to keep resort guests safe:

 Types of Accidents & Injuries

Every winter season, there are a number of accidents involving, for example, such tragedies as guests falling from chair lifts and associated platforms. However, most accidents on the slopes are simply due to crashing when conditions are less than ideal, sometimes due to too much ice being present. When conditions are too icy or otherwise dangerous, it can be negligent for the resorts and their employees to allow less experienced, younger skiers out on the slopes, and these accidents can still occur when the skier is wearing a helmet.

Sadly, every year, we hear more and more reports of children specifically dying in ski accidents for a number of reasons – some when they run into others on the slopes, others after accessing dangerous ski jumps that should be off-limits to underage skiers, etc. And the accidents are by no means limited to the slopes: People get injured in a number of areas on these resorts – in bowling alleys, restaurants, swimming pools, hot tubs, and even in the hotel rooms. Accidents like these can not only lead to pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, and more. Individuals injured on the slopes can sustain severe spinal, head trauma, and facial injuries, and in severe cases, paraplegia or even death.

Duties of the Resorts

When it comes to potentially hazardous conditions, resorts who invite customers onto their property must ensure that that property is safe for its intended use. If a property owner is aware of a potentially dangerous condition, they must make efforts to provide warning signs and/or mark the area as closed off to the public.

Shockingly, some of these accidents even occur in areas of the park which are not intended for the general public, but which have not been properly sectioned off with warnings, such as special Olympic runs. In that case, it can be easy to confuse them as part of the regular features of the park, leading to serious accidents.
