Car Accident in Macon, GA

We at Buzzell, Welsh & Hill were saddened to hear the news of a local high school senior’s death in a Macon auto accident.

The 17-year-old student died after her car went off the roadway going north on I-475/I-75. The accident occurred a little before 3:30 p.m.

Unfortunately, car accidents, large truck accidents, and motorcycle wrecks happen all too often in Macon, Warner Robins, and Dublin. Accident victims and their families come to us for expert advice and our years of experience.

While no one plans to be in an accident, it’s important to have a plan in place if you or a loved one is injured. Your first priority should always be safety. Call 911 immediately and allow yourself to be examined by EMTs. They can help determine whether you need to go to the hospital for urgent treatment or if you can wait to see your doctor later.

If you’re injured, you’ll want to call a family member or friend who can arrive quickly at the accident site. This person will be able to note details about the accident, allowing you to focus entirely on your medical care. Make sure you also have an emergency contact programmed into your phone. If you’re seriously injured and unable to make the call yourself, someone may be able to do it for you.

Once your family member or friend is on the scene, he or she can gather the information you will need if you later pursue a settlement. When the police arrive, be sure they write up a report. If you go to court, you will need a police report showing exactly what happened and who was at fault. The police can help ensure everyone involved in the accident provides their contact information, addresses, driver’s license numbers and insurance information.

You’ll also want to make a report of the scene yourself, or ask your friend or family member to. Take photos and video of the scene from all angles. Speak to witnesses—other drivers, passengers or bystanders—and get their version of events and their contact information.

If you’re hospitalized, you’ll likely need to make follow-up appointments with your doctor or specialists afterward. If you decide not to go to the hospital, you will still want to make an appointment with your family doctor. Keep your appointments and get the treatment you need. Documentation of your injuries is critical if you later try to recoup medical expenses or other damages.

Before you accept any settlement offered by the insurance company, be sure to speak with an auto accident attorney. Even if your injuries don’t seem extensive, a personal injury lawyer can help you determine if you qualify for a settlement that covers your medical bills, missed wages, or pain and suffering.
